How should a good leader be? “If you've ever asked the question 'who was the best leader you've ever had and why?', you'll no doubt receive a variety of answers. This is what happens to me when I ask this same question at the beginning of my leadership workshops and classes. The truth is that I receive a large number of responses : from leaders who are assertive to those who know how to listen or are truly authentic , despite their imperfections. Therefore, instead of all people sharing the same opinion about what the best leadership style is , there are great differences of opinion regarding what makes a great Europe Mobile Number List leader and what circumstances demand different leadership styles . What is the importance of having different leadership styles? “The situational leadership model , adapted by Hersey and Blanchard, is an excellent example of how adapting our leadership styles to each situation can provide better results. This model states that each team member will require a different level of support and guidance from their leader : an inexperienced team member will need much more guidance than an experienced one, as will a member who is interested and motivated to work. You will need less support and encouragement than someone who is not as motivated. According to Hersey and Blanchard, needing more or less support or guidance can be combined into four leadership styles. Furthermore, they establish that this leadership style must be chosen based on the specific characteristics of a team member in order to get the most out of it . Leadership styles So what are the four leadership styles? 1. Control style “When a team member is motivated , they need a leadership style that is low on support and high on guidance ; It is what Hersey and Blanchard call a directive leadership style . This team member will not need much encouragement or emotional support because he already has the will to finish his job. Instead, he needs the leader to spend all his time helping him know what to do and guiding him on how to do it .” 2. Supervision style “A supervisory leadership style should be used when a team member has little ability and will and they need direction and support to complete their work .” The supervisory style involves a leader persuading why a task is worth doing and explaining how to do it .” 3. Advice style “A leader should employ a consultative leadership style when a team member has the knowledge necessary to accomplish the task, but lacks commitment. The coaching style is high on support , but low on direction – the time you spend with this team member is focused on motivating them , encouraging them, and developing their enthusiasm.
